What Is the Unicorn Gundam? — The "Beast of Possibility" Opens the Door to a New Century

"Even so!" — Banagher Links screamed those words over and over, and they came to define the Unicorn Gundam itself. No matter how hopeless the situation, the boy kept believing in humanity's potential, and the white machine answered his will by awakening again and again. Born as a novel in 2007 and brought to life as a seven-episode OVA from 2010 to 2014, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam — the protagonist machine of Mobile Suit Gundam UC (Unicorn) — stands as the culmination of Universal Century Gundam.

A pure white body. A single horn rising from its forehead. And when the pilot's will reaches a certain threshold, the Psycho-Frame throughout its entire body ignites red, and the machine "transforms" into a Gundam — this revolutionary gimmick carved a new page in the history of the franchise. The life-size statue standing in Odaiba recreates this transformation in the real world, drawing millions of visitors from around the globe each year and becoming an iconic symbol of Tokyo.

"People are weak. People are imperfect. That's why we entrust our hopes to one another. And we keep walking, carrying what's been entrusted to us." With the spirit of those words as our guide, let us unravel everything about the Unicorn Gundam.

Changes in Destroy Mode

Field Change
Head Height 17.7m → 21.7m (approx. 23% increase)
Generator Output Immeasurable
Total Thruster Thrust Immeasurable
Operational Limit Approx. 5 minutes
Visual Change All armor panels open; Psycho-Frame exposed and glowing

Even in Unicorn Mode alone, the generator output of 3,480kW is extraordinarily high for its era. For comparison, the Nu Gundam sits at 2,980kW and the Sazabi at 3,960kW. But when Destroy Mode activates, both output and thrust skyrocket to levels that are literally immeasurable. This is not a simple power boost — it occurs because the Psycho-Frame amplifies the pilot's psycho-waves, producing phenomena that transcend the laws of physics.

The fact that its head height grows from 17.7m to 21.7m — a gain of roughly four meters — is equally extraordinary. As the Psycho-Frame expands through the gaps in its armor, the machine literally "grows." The sight of its armor panels opening to reveal pulsating red light from within evokes something almost mystical — a chrysalis transforming into a butterfly.

The NT-D System and Full Psycho-Frame — The Mechanism Behind Awakening

What Is the Psycho-Frame?

The Psycho-Frame is a special structural material that embeds psychocommu (psychic resonance device) chips directly into a mobile suit's frame components. It first appeared in Amuro's Nu Gundam during Char's Counterattack, where it was used around the cockpit area and triggered the miraculous Axis Shock.

The Unicorn Gundam is the first machine in history to construct its entire movable frame — every piece of its internal skeleton — from Psycho-Frame material. Not just around the cockpit, but from the tips of its head to the soles of its feet, every bone in its body is Psycho-Frame. The pilot's mind is transmitted directly through the entire machine — the ultimate interface.

The NT-D System (Newtype Destroyer)

NT-D stands for "Newtype Destroyer," and true to its name, it was originally designed as a system to annihilate Newtypes. For the Earth Federation government, the existence of Newtypes was a political threat intimately linked to the secret of "Laplace's Box," and this system was developed to ensure the decisive destruction of Newtype-type MS equipped with psychocommu weapons.

How NT-D Activation Works

  1. Psycho-wave detection: The system's activation conditions are met when it detects Newtype psycho-waves in the surrounding area
  2. Intention Automatic System: A mode that directly translates the pilot's will into machine control is unlocked
  3. Armor deployment: Armor panels across the entire body slide open, exposing the embedded Psycho-Frame, which begins emitting red light
  4. Exponential performance increase: Output and thrust rise to "immeasurable" levels, and the machine's head height increases by approximately four meters
  5. Psychocommu-jack: The NT-D can hijack enemy psychocommu weapons (such as funnels) and use them as its own

Operational Limits and Physical Toll

The strain on the pilot during Destroy Mode is immense — the operational limit is approximately five minutes. The psychocommu connection's flow limiters are forcibly overridden, leaving the pilot's psyche fully exposed and directly linked to the machine. Maintaining consciousness itself becomes a struggle. Unicorn Mode is the "safe state" in which these limiters remain active, symbolized by the shape of its horn (the V-antenna closed into a single horn).

"Awakening" — The Green Light

In the story's finale, when Banagher's will reached an even higher plane, the Psycho-Frame began radiating not red but green light. This is the same color the Nu Gundam emitted during the Axis Shock — the color of "awakening," where human will transcends the laws of physics. Fans call this form "Kami-corn" (God Unicorn), and in this state, the machine cloaked itself in a beam barrier, deflected enemy beams, and exhibited supernatural power that seemed to reverse time itself.

The Psycho-Frame Lineage — From the Nu Gundam to Unicorn

Tracing the history of the Psycho-Frame throws the Unicorn Gundam's extraordinary nature into sharp relief.

Machine Psycho-Frame Coverage Phenomena Triggered
Nu Gundam Cockpit area only Axis Shock (altering an asteroid's trajectory)
Sazabi Cockpit area only Resonance with the Nu Gundam
Unicorn Gundam Entire body (Full Psycho-Frame) Time reversal phenomena, transcendence of physics
Banshee Entire body (Full Psycho-Frame) Resonance and awakening with Unicorn
Phenex Entire body (Full Psycho-Frame) Fusion with pilot, autonomous operation

The Nu Gundam altered the trajectory of an asteroid using Psycho-Frame in its cockpit area alone. The power unleashed by the Unicorn — with Psycho-Frame throughout its entire body — is on a completely different scale. In episode 7, when Banagher reached "awakening," the machine blocked a direct hit from a colony laser, simultaneously neutralized every enemy psychocommu weapon in the area, and ultimately produced a supernatural phenomenon that appeared to reverse time itself. This power was so staggering that after UC 0097, the Earth Federation government effectively banned the use of Psycho-Frame technology.

Armament — The "One-Shot Kill" Beam Magnum and a Versatile Arsenal

Beam Magnum

Field Detail
Official Name Beam Magnum
Output Equivalent to approx. 4 standard beam rifle shots
Ammunition 5 energy cartridges (E-Packs)

The Beam Magnum is the Unicorn Gundam's signature weapon and one of the most powerful handheld beam weapons in the Universal Century. A standard beam rifle divides the energy of one E-Pack across dozens of shots. The Beam Magnum expends an entire E-Pack in a single shot — a literal "one-shot kill" weapon.

Its destructive power is sufficient to vaporize a mobile suit in one hit and deal lethal damage even to warships. In episode 2, "The Second Coming of Char," Banagher fired the Beam Magnum through the Sinanju's shield, obliterating both the shield and the surrounding structures — a visual proof of its devastating firepower. The trade-off, however, is its extremely limited ammunition: just five shots with five E-Packs (including spares). This tension between "overwhelming firepower versus critical ammo scarcity" lent every battle involving the Unicorn Gundam a palpable sense of urgency.

The design philosophy of the Beam Magnum mirrors the Unicorn Gundam's very nature — every single shot carries weight. The decision to fire or hold fire can shift the course of battle. A weapon that fights with quality over quantity, perfectly reflecting Banagher's determination to face every choice head-on.

Beam Sabers

Field Detail
Number Equipped 4 (2 on backpack + 2 in forearms)
Special Use Usable as beam tonfas in Destroy Mode

Four beam sabers are carried: two on the backpack and one in each forearm, for a total of four. In Unicorn Mode, only the two backpack-mounted sabers are accessible. In Destroy Mode, the saber holders on the backpack deploy and expand, forming a silhouette reminiscent of the original RX-78 Gundam. The forearm-mounted sabers can be used as "beam tonfas" — swinging the arm instantly deploys the beam blade — providing devastating effectiveness in close combat.

Shield

Field Detail
Official Name Shield
Built-in Equipment Psycho-Frame, I-Field Generator
Special Function Anti-beam barrier deployment

A high-performance shield housing both Psycho-Frame material and an I-Field beam barrier generator. The centrally mounted I-Field generator can project an anti-beam barrier, providing protection against both solid projectiles and beam attacks. In Destroy Mode, the shield itself opens up, exposing its Psycho-Frame.

Hyper Bazooka

Field Detail
Ammunition Type Shotgun-type scatter rounds (default)
Magazine System Cartridge-based (spare magazines can be carried)

A Unicorn Gundam-specific modification of the Federation's standard MS bazooka. The default warheads are scatter rounds suited for wide-area suppression. The cartridge-based magazine system allows spare magazines to be carried in the field. When not in use, it can be mounted on the backpack.

Head Vulcans

Two 60mm vulcan guns are built into the head. Standard equipment used for suppressive fire and close-range interception, operable in both Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode. A traditional fixture of Federation Gundam-types dating back to the RX-78, they serve as a minimum self-defense option when the Beam Magnum cannot be used.

Beam Gatling Guns

An optional weapon mounted on the underside of the shield. With its high rate of fire, the Beam Gatling Gun compensates for the Beam Magnum's limited ammunition. In the Full Armor configuration, two Gatling guns are mounted on each of three shields, for a total of six units.

Full Armor Unicorn Gundam — The Final Battle Configuration

Overview

This is the Unicorn Gundam's ultimate combat loadout, appearing in the story's climax (episode 7, "Over the Rainbow"). "Full Armor" is not an official designation — it is a fan and Bandai product name — but given the sheer volume of weaponry, the title fits perfectly.

Additional Armament List

Weapon Quantity Features
Hyper Bazooka 2 Mounted on the back; scatter-round configuration
Beam Gatling Guns 4 2 mounted behind each shield
Grenade Launchers 2 Incendiary warheads
Anti-Ship Missile Launchers 2 Designed for attacking large vessels
Hand Grenades 4 Sequential-detonation type
Shields 3 Both forearms + back-mounted

Shield Funnels — Psychocommu-Driven Floating Shields

The most remarkable feature of the Full Armor configuration is the ability to remotely operate the three shields like funnels using the NT-D's power. With two Beam Gatling Guns mounted behind each one, the shields fly independently according to the pilot's will, enabling simultaneous offense and defense from all directions.

In the final battle, after exhausting all ballistic ammunition, Banagher deployed the three shields as funnels while wielding the Beam Magnum and charged head-on at the Neo Zeong. That image — refusing to yield a single step against the overwhelming mass of the Neo Zeong — became the ultimate symbol of the "Beast of Possibility."

Profile

Field Detail
Name Banagher Links
Age 16 (as of UC 0096)
Voice Actor Naoya Uchida (novel PV) → Koki Uchiyama (OVA / TV series)
Affiliation Anaheim Industrial College student → Londo Bell (Nahel Argama)
Father Cardeas Vist (head of the Vist Foundation)

Character — An "Ordinary Boy" Who Changes the World

Banagher had no special military training. He never wanted to throw himself into war. He was an ordinary student at the Anaheim Industrial College. But when he tried to save a girl he happened to meet — Audrey Burne (Mineva Lao Zabi) — his father Cardeas entrusted him with the Unicorn Gundam, the key to "Laplace's Box."

Banagher's strength lies not in combat ability but in his "power to believe." No matter how many times he is betrayed or deceived, he rises again with an "Even so!" He never gives up on humanity's potential. It is this pure will that awakens the NT-D and draws out the Unicorn Gundam's true power.

Iconic Lines

"I did it... I really did it! I gave everything I had! And this is the result!" (Episode 4)

A cry of anguish from Banagher as he wanders through the desert, raging against the absurdity of war. "I got in the mobile suit, fought and killed, and now I'm walking through the desert! What more am I supposed to do?! What am I supposed to fight?!" — the crushing weight on a sixteen-year-old boy's shoulders erupting in one of the most memorable scenes in all of Gundam.

"Even so!" (Throughout all episodes)

This single phrase became Banagher's defining line. It transcends logic and reason — a declaration of sheer willpower. No matter how many times it is repeated, each utterance carries renewed resolve. A protagonist's catchphrase this simple yet this powerful is rare even across the entire Gundam franchise.

"People are weak. People are imperfect. That's why we entrust our hopes to one another. And we keep walking, carrying what's been entrusted to us." (Episode 7)

The answer Banagher arrives at in the final episode. "Possibility" is not perfection — it is imperfect human beings entrusting their hopes to one another and continuing to move forward. This line distills the entire theme of Gundam UC into a single statement.

"I don't want to forget... that people feel sadness... that we have hearts capable of feeling sorrow!" (Episode 5)

Banagher's most human cry as he struggles to overcome the death of Lieutenant Commander Daguza. "I want to become someone who can bear that weight! ...Just like you, Captain!" This scene captures Banagher not as a mere child soldier but as a young man growing as a human being.

Key Scenes

  • Episode 1, "Day of the Unicorn": Cardeas's death and Banagher's first encounter with the Unicorn Gundam. The first Destroy Mode awakening overwhelms the Kshatriya
  • Episode 3, "The Ghost of Laplace": Escape from Palau. In a desperate battle against Marida Cruz's Kshatriya, the NT-D hijacks her funnels
  • Episode 4, "At the Bottom of the Gravity Well": The ground arc. Banagher's anguished cry in the desert and the battle at Dakar
  • Episode 5, "Black Unicorn": First encounter with the Banshee. Lieutenant Commander Daguza is killed in action
  • Episode 7, "Over the Rainbow": The final battle against the Neo Zeong in Full Armor configuration. Awakening in green light

The RX-0 Series — Three Mythical Beasts

The Unicorn Gundam is not a standalone machine — it was developed as part of the RX-0 series of three units. Unit 1 Unicorn, Unit 2 Banshee, Unit 3 Phenex — three siblings, each destined for a different fate.

RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Unit 2: Banshee

Field Detail
Model Number RX-0 (post-upgrade: RX-0[N])
Nickname Banshee (post-upgrade: Banshee Norn)
Color Scheme Dark navy (Unicorn Mode) / Gold glow (Destroy Mode)
Pilot Marida Cruz → Riddhe Marcenas
Name Origin Banshee (Irish fairy of wailing)

The Banshee is the black counterpart to the Unicorn — a dark twin developed as its "pair." It shares the same Full Psycho-Frame construction as Unit 1, but its color is deep navy (nearly jet black), and its Psycho-Frame glows gold (orange) instead of red in Destroy Mode.

Its initial pilot was Marida Cruz (Ple Twelve), later succeeded by Riddhe Marcenas. Under Riddhe's command, the unit was upgraded to the "Banshee Norn" configuration with the addition of the Armed Armor DE (large shield booster) and Armed Armor XC (backpack augmentation unit).

The Banshee's unique armament is oriented toward close-quarters combat, distinguishing it from the Unicorn.

  • Armed Armor VN: A massive claw-type melee weapon mounted on the right arm. "VN" stands for "Vibro Nail" — it tears through enemy armor using hyper-vibration
  • Armed Armor BS: A large beam cannon built into the left arm's shield. When deployed, it functions as a beam smart gun with penetrating power rivaling the Beam Magnum

Narratively, the Banshee serves the role of "standing against the Unicorn, only to eventually fight alongside it." The sheer menace of the black beast looming before Banagher in episode 5 was visually stunning — a perfect "black" to the Unicorn's "white." The final battle, where Riddhe overcomes his inner darkness — his obsession with Mineva, his conflict over his family name, his jealousy toward Banagher — and stands beside Banagher against the Neo Zeong, is a deeply moving scene in which two beasts stand together for the first time.

RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Unit 3: Phenex

Field Detail
Model Number RX-0
Nickname Phenex
Color Scheme Gold
Pilot Rita Bernal (residual consciousness)
Name Origin Phoenix (the immortal bird)
Featured In Mobile Suit Gundam NT (2018 theatrical film)

Unit 3 Phenex was assembled independently by the Federation military using a Full Psycho-Frame body delivered in advance for testing in UC 0095, incorporating construction data from Units 1 and 2. Its golden body and two Armed Armor DE units — mounted on its back like wings — give it a mystical appearance befitting its phoenix namesake.

Test pilot Rita Bernal fused with the machine during an NT-D activation, and the unit has operated autonomously without a pilot ever since. In the 2018 theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam NT (Narrative), set in UC 0097, the "Phoenix Hunt" for this rogue machine becomes the story's central arc.

The Phenex's existence reveals the terror of the Psycho-Frame from a different angle. A pilot's soul is absorbed into the machine, and even after the physical body ceases to exist, the machine continues to move. This represents the ultimate destination of "human-machine fusion" while simultaneously proving that the Psycho-Frame has transcended the boundaries of a mere weapon. The sight of the Phenex's golden wings streaking across the cosmos in Gundam NT is no longer a mobile suit — it is a true phoenix.

"Laplace's Box" and the UC Plan — Why the Unicorn Was Created

What Is Laplace's Box?

In UC 0001, the Earth Federation government's prime minister's residence "Laplace" was destroyed in a terrorist bombing — that is the official history. But the truth was different. Laplace had housed the original text of the Earth Federation Charter.

That original contained one article absent from the publicly distributed replicas:

"Should a new type of humanity, adapted to life in space, emerge from among the space emigrants in the future, they shall be given priority participation in the administration of the government."

In other words: if Newtypes appear, bring them into the political process. If enforced, this clause would upend the ruling system of the privileged classes clinging to Earth. That is why the Federation government concealed this article for nearly a century, disguising the destruction of the original as a terrorist attack.

The man who recovered the original amid the bombing was Syam Vist. Using this "Box" as leverage, he extracted limitless concessions from the Federation government and built the massive Vist Foundation.

The UC Plan — A Weapon to Destroy Newtypes

The UC Plan was a top-secret Earth Federation project designed to completely eliminate the Newtype threat in the lead-up to UC 0100, when the Republic of Zeon was set to return its autonomous rights.

  • Official purpose: Development of next-generation mobile suits
  • True purpose: Annihilation of Newtypes via the NT-D System and the permanent sealing of "Laplace's Box"

The Unicorn Gundam was the weapon built for this plan. As the name NT-D (Newtype Destroyer) makes explicit, it was designed as a "destroyer of Newtypes" — a deeply ironic existence. However, Cardeas Vist (Banagher's father), following the wishes of his grandfather Syam, secretly embedded the "La+ (Laplace) Program" into the Unicorn.

This program guides the pilot to coordinates tied to the history of the Universal Century, ultimately leading them to the truth of "Laplace's Box" — a weapon built to annihilate Newtypes, transformed into a key to prove the potential of Newtypes.

Design History — Hajime Katoki's "Transforming Gundam"

The Original Novel and the Birth of the Design

The mechanical designer behind the Unicorn Gundam is Hajime Katoki — the designer who established the "Ver.Ka" brand in the Gundam franchise, renowned for his realistic and precision-focused mecha design.

"The Gundam's V-antenna closes into a single horn, and a visor hides the eyes, erasing the visual markers of a Gundam" — this "transformation" concept came from the original novel's author, Harutoshi Fukui. However, Katoki initially opposed it.

Katoki's Concerns and the Resulting Breakthrough

Katoki's objections centered on two main points:

  1. Difficulty of merchandising: A gimmick where the horn splits vertically and deploys would be extremely difficult to reproduce at toy and model kit scales
  2. Insufficient visual impact: If only the head changed, the sense of transformation would feel underwhelming

Yet these very concerns sparked innovation. Reasoning that "just the head isn't enough," Katoki expanded the concept into a design where the entire body transforms. A machine whose head height changes, whose armor panels open across the entire body to expose the Psycho-Frame — this unprecedented "transformation gimmick" was born.

Katoki himself reportedly said, "There's no way a gimmick this complex can be turned into a product," yet the design was approved on the first submission. In the end, this design was brilliantly realized in high-precision Gunpla — PG, MGEX, RG — and engineering surpassed the very concerns Katoki had raised.

Design Philosophy — The Meaning of "White"

The pure white coloring of Unicorn Mode symbolizes "a canvas not yet painted — pure possibility." While previous Gundams were unified under the iconic "tricolor" scheme (red, blue, white, and yellow), the Unicorn Gundam is strikingly all white. Narratively, this is a metaphor for Banagher being "nobody yet" — an ordinary boy — and his capacity to become anything, embodying "possibility" itself.

The red Psycho-Frame exposed in Destroy Mode represents the pilot's emotions. And its final transformation to green signifies "humanity's potential" transcending individual emotion — the same color as the miracle that pushed back Axis.

Cultural Impact — "Possibility" Standing in Odaiba

The Life-Size Unicorn Gundam Statue

In September 2017, a life-size Unicorn Gundam statue (19.7m tall) was installed at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba. Built as the successor to the original Gundam life-size statue (2009–2017), this is far more than a static display.

  • Daily transformations: The statue performs its Unicorn Mode-to-Destroy Mode transformation at 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00 during the day
  • Nighttime shows: From 19:00 to 21:30, projection mapping shows with different storylines run every 30 minutes
  • Visitor numbers: Drawing millions of tourists per year — including a significant number of international visitors — it has become one of Tokyo's most prominent landmarks

Watching the white giant transform before your eyes — the horn splitting, the armor panels opening, the red light radiating as it shifts into Destroy Mode — is an awe-inspiring experience regardless of whether you are a Gundam fan. The Odaiba statue elevated the Unicorn Gundam from "a character in an anime" to "a real-world symbol."

Commercial Success

The Mobile Suit Gundam UC OVA series (all seven volumes) sold approximately 1.8 million cumulative Blu-ray/DVD copies, setting a new sales record for Gundam franchise home video releases. Each episode also performed strongly in theatrical screenings, achieving phenomenon-level success despite being an OVA format.

In the Gunpla space, Unicorn Gundam-related kits rank among the top-selling of all time. Kits have been released across every grade from HG to PG, and the Unicorn Gundam was chosen as the inaugural release for the MGEX (Master Grade Extreme) brand — a pillar of Bandai's product strategy.

Penetration into Fan Culture

  • "Even so!": Banagher's catchphrase has been meme-ified online, used as an expression of refusing to give up in the face of adversity
  • "Beast of Possibility": The Unicorn's epithet has spread as a phrase used to describe challengers and promising newcomers
  • "Destroy Mode": Has become a figure of speech meaning "going all-out" or "awakening one's true power"
  • Hiroyuki Sawano's soundtrack: Tracks like "UNICORN" and "MOBILE SUIT" have been acclaimed as masterpieces of anime music, transcending the Gundam franchise
  • Pachinko / Pachislot: The "Fever Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn" series became a major hit in the pachinko and pachislot market, further broadening Gundam UC's recognition
  • "Laplace's Box": Referenced in broader culture as shorthand for "a secret that could change the world," invoked when discussing political conspiracies or Pandora's Box-like concepts
  • International popularity: UC is particularly popular among Western Gundam fans, and the name "Unicorn" and the Destroy Mode visuals have spread via social media even to audiences unfamiliar with Gundam

Gunpla Guide — Every Grade Covered

The Unicorn Gundam is one of the few machines to have Gunpla kits released across every single grade. The key differentiator between grades is how faithfully the "transformation gimmick" is reproduced.

HGUC (High Grade Universal Century) 1/144

Kit Name Price (Tax Incl.) Highlights
HGUC Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) ~2,200 yen The classic entry point. Fixed Destroy Mode but easy to build
HGUC Unicorn Gundam (Unicorn Mode) ~2,200 yen Fixed Unicorn Mode. Simple, elegant beauty
HGUC Full Armor Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) ~3,520 yen Fully loaded with all weapons. Outstanding volume
HGUC Full Armor Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode / Red Color Ver.) ~3,960 yen Clear red molding for Psycho-Frame parts
HGUC Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee (Destroy Mode) ~2,200 yen The black Unicorn. Stunning jet-black body
HGUC Banshee Norn (Destroy Mode) ~2,420 yen Equipped with Armed Armor DE/XC

The HGUC line does not include the transformation gimmick, so Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode are sold as separate kits. The trade-off is ease of assembly, making these the clear recommendation for Gunpla beginners. The affordable price point of roughly 2,200 yen is another major draw.

RG (Real Grade) 1/144

Kit Name Price (Tax Incl.) Highlights
RG Unicorn Gundam ~4,400 yen Transformation gimmick at 1/144 scale. A landmark kit
RG Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Norn ~4,950 yen The Banshee Norn in RG. Fully transformable
RG Full Armor Unicorn Gundam ~6,050 yen Full Armor loadout + transformation gimmick
RG Unicorn Gundam (Final Battle Ver.) Limited edition Gundam Base exclusive. Special coating

The RG Unicorn Gundam is a groundbreaking kit that fully reproduces the Unicorn-to-Destroy Mode transformation at the compact 1/144 scale. Clear parts representing the Psycho-Frame are built into the internal frame, and opening the armor panels reveals a Destroy Mode wreathed in red light. It sold out repeatedly at launch and has cemented its place as a legendary Gunpla release.

However, the cost of the transformation gimmick is a large number of small parts and somewhat unreliable armor retention. It is best enjoyed as a kit for experiencing the transformation rather than for dynamic posing.

MG (Master Grade) 1/100

Kit Name Price (Tax Incl.) Highlights
MG Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka ~5,500 yen Supervised by Hajime Katoki. Transformation gimmick included
MG Full Armor Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka ~8,250 yen Full Armor loadout. Jaw-dropping volume
MG Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Ver.Ka ~5,500 yen The jet-black Banshee. Fully transformable
MG Banshee Norn Ver.Ka ~6,600 yen Complete reproduction of the Norn configuration
MG Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex ~6,600 yen The golden Phenex. A genuinely special kit

The MG Ver.Ka line features the transformation gimmick at the impressive 1/100 scale. Parts are larger and more manageable than the RG, though some builders note the armor panels open somewhat conservatively during transformation. Each kit includes Ver.Ka-specific marking decals that dramatically increase visual density when applied.

MGEX (Master Grade Extreme) 1/100

Kit Name Price (Tax Incl.) Highlights
MGEX Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka 25,300 yen The pinnacle of MG. LED illumination + transformation + color change achieved simultaneously for the first time

MGEX (Master Grade Extreme) is a new brand that pushes the MG concept to its absolute limit, and the Unicorn Gundam was chosen as its inaugural release. Its defining feature is the flexible LED sheet. LED sheets are embedded throughout the entire body, faithfully reproducing the Psycho-Frame's glow — including the shift from red to green.

Transformation gimmick, LED illumination, color variation, articulation — this is the first kit ever to achieve all of these at 1/100 scale, making it nothing less than "the ultimate realization of the Unicorn Gundam in model form." The trade-off is a premium price tag of 25,300 yen and advanced-level build difficulty. Internal wiring does slightly limit articulation range, which is worth keeping in mind.

PG (Perfect Grade) 1/60

Kit Name Price (Tax Incl.) Highlights
PG Unicorn Gundam 22,000 yen Massive 1/60 presence. Transformation gimmick included
PG Unicorn Gundam (Final Battle Ver.) Premium Bandai exclusive Final battle configuration
PG Unicorn Gundam LED Unit Sold separately Adds LED illumination
PG Banshee Norn 27,500 yen Banshee in PG. Imposing black-and-gold gravitas
PG Phenex Premium Bandai exclusive Golden Phenex. Wing-like DE units

The PG Unicorn Gundam features the transformation gimmick at an overwhelming scale of approximately 38cm in total height. Installing the separately sold LED unit enables Psycho-Frame illumination as well. Part retention is significantly superior to both the RG and MG, making this the grade that delivers the most stable and satisfying transformation experience.

At PG scale, the Psycho-Frame exposure area when the armor opens is vast, and the beauty of the red clear parts truly shines. The display presence is commanding — like having a miniature version of the life-size statue standing in your room.

Legacy Beyond UC — The Unicorn After Its Story

Mobile Suit Gundam NT (Narrative)

Set in UC 0097, Gundam NT is a story that could be called "the aftermath of the Unicorn Gundam." The supernatural power of the Psycho-Frame demonstrated during the Laplace Incident became the greatest threat to the Earth Federation government, accelerating efforts to seal away all Psycho-Frame-equipped machines. The battle to capture the Phenex — the only unit that has not been secured — drives the narrative.

This work speaks volumes about the magnitude of the Unicorn Gundam's impact on Universal Century history. The miracle revealed by the "Beast of Possibility" was hope and terror in equal measure — and Gundam NT explores both sides of that coin.

Appearances in Games and Manga

The Unicorn Gundam has appeared in numerous video game titles.

  • Super Robot Wars series: The transformation into Destroy Mode is faithfully reproduced, and the awakening event sequences have received high praise
  • Gundam VS series: Deployed as a 3000-cost (highest rank) unit. Destroy Mode transformation, NT-D funnel-jacking, and the green light of awakening are all faithfully recreated
  • SD Gundam G Generation: Three-stage transformation is possible — Unicorn Mode / Destroy Mode / Awakening

The Future of the Odaiba Statue

Since its installation in 2017, the Odaiba Unicorn Gundam statue has firmly established itself as a Tokyo landmark. Considering the original Gundam statue stood for eight years, the Unicorn statue is likely to remain as an icon of Tokyo for years to come. Seasonal illumination events and collaborations continue to draw crowds, making it a destination worth visiting even for those who are not Gundam fans.
